The
Paradigm Studio 100 has just been redone is now Version 5. We’ve been S-100 fans for
many years when our customers want a good size tower to deliver prodigious punch. The
S-100v5 is a nice step up from prior versions! It features three 7” mineral filled
polypropylene woofers. Three of these suckers will glue you to your seat- if that’s
what you want to do! They’re deep and powerful. The 7” mid driver is a Satin
anodized, pure aluminum cone providing excellent stiffness and linearity. The 1” Gold
anodized pure aluminum tweeter is the smoothest in Paradigm’s history. You mate all
this together with terrific 93dB efficiency and you’ve got a great speaker that
doesn’t need a ton of power to sound good!
CD
Player: Marantz CD-5003 $350
Marantz has redefined the category of a great budget
source! Up to now virtually every CD player in this range has been a real mixed bag of
limited mechanical integrity and relatively bright sounding chipsets. The CD-5003 has
broken the mold with a sledge hammer! It is built solidly, clearly benefiting the sound
and reliability. If Naim could build a $350 CD player, this is what it would be!
Integrated
Amp: Marantz PM-8003 $1000
Marantz has had an outstanding Reference Line for many
years. PM-8003, 70 w/ch, is cut from the same cloth. It takes advantage of most of the Ref
Line technology. For example, it uses Marantz’s toroidal transformer and patented
HDAM design, where various sections of the circuit board are physically boxed in to
isolate those components from interacting with others. It has a Source Direct circuit that
shortcuts the electronic path (tone controls & balance are bypassed) to a
significantly appreciable sonic advantage. It has an excellent phono section, pre-out,
main-in and super headphone amp. The sound is big and clean- just a bit south of the Naim
XS!
Interconnect
Cables: Black Velvet $100
The Black Velvet interconnect features a 100% shielded
cable with some of the best “make & break” connectors on the market. The
sound is clear and yet a bit mellow!
Speaker
Cables: 
Kimber 4VS, $5 per foot, with Tributary
banana plugs at the amp and speaker ends. The 4VS uses the same variable strand technology
of the TC models. The jacket is poly instead of Teflon so it doesn’t have quite the Teflon clarity. Two terminated 8’
runs = $160.
