B&W ASW-610XP Subwoofer, $1200

In 2007 B&W introduced its new 600 Series line of speakers. They have met with nothing short of rave reviews. It’s been a year and they’re still introducing new models in the line. The demand has been strong enough that they chose to fill the pipeline on the main models (685, 684 & 683) before offering a higher end, powered subwoofer, the ASW-610XP.

At the time of the rollout the demand was so high that they only had black. Then they went to cherry. Now they have added the Wenge (walnut-ish) finish.

The ASW-610 and ASW-608 subs came out right away. The 610XP had to wait as they filled the pipeline on these more meat & potato sellers.

The ASW-610XP is in the same size cabinet as the ASW-610 (12 1/4h, 12 3/8w, 14 3/4d). But the ASW-610XP is more than a little turbo charged! It has a different ten inch woofer with DUAL VOICE COILS. Each voice coil has its dedicated 200w ICEpower amp. The result is a modestly sized sub with big time push. More importantly, it isn’t “one note” bass. It has depth and texture to make it sound good with music too!

B&W subs have more adjustments than most. Most allow you to set crossover and adjust volume. That’s just the start with B&W. They offer several other adjustments that allow you to tailor the sound to your room, or taste. The result is that B&W subs can work well in a tough environment like a basement theater, or a less demanding environment like a main floor system. With the control options on a B&W sub, we can dial it in pretty seamlessly.

Beethoven Cello Sonatas featuring Adrian & Alfred Brendel

Alfred Brendel, B&W spokesman and world famous concert pianist, will be retiring this year. We would like to highlight one of our favorite CDs of his this month. It’s a double disc set on Philips featuring Alfred and his son, Adrian. Adrian is a great cellist and the disc features the complete LVB cello/piano works. It was recorded in 2004 and sounds terrific. The snobby musicologists love it too!
