Marantz NR-1501 Surround Receiver, $600 (4 3/16h, 17 3/8w, 14 1/2d)

Marantz is introducing a new “low profile” surround receiver. Marantz’s other surround receivers are of traditional size- 6 5/16” tall. NR-1501 is meant for systems where you are tight in space or don’t need a ton of features. At 50x7 of discrete output power, NR-1501 will drive the vast majority of speakers very well. You’re going to ask the sub to do the heavy lifting.

Matching the NR-1501 to Marantz’s $550 Blu-ray player gives you two units of the same size, excellent performance, both with a 3 year warranty for only $1150.

NR-1501 has HD audio codecs, MRAC setup, 4 HDMI in, Your money is going into a lot of performance in a modest chassis size with IPOD jack on front.

Paradigm SUB 15 $2800: 19 1/2h, 19 1/2w, 22d, 103 lbs! Black, Cherry or Rose

After being back ordered since early summer, Paradigm’s SUB 15 is now back on display! The SUB 15 is a “working man’s” SUB 25. Neither of these subs apologize for being large. Get out of the way and enjoy the foundation of the music!

SUB 25 is Paradigm’s top dog. At $4k it has a 15” Ribbed Cone and 3000w amp! SUB 15 uses the same driver along with a 1700w amp. Yup, we think 1700 watts are enough!

SUB 15 is designed for moving your floorboards. When you want a sub to knock you on your keister for movies or music, it’s hard to think of a better choice. SUB 15 isn’t designed to be lean and light. It doesn’t’ “pretend” to be a heavyweight with small cabinet, driver and chip amp. SUB 15 is the real deal, a gorilla of a sub that does precisely what it was designed to do, make you feel the energy of the performance!

Paradigm Monitor Seven: The Sleek Tower With Muscle! (35 15/16h, 6 1/2w, 11 3/4d)

Paradigm’s Monitor Seven ($800pr) continues to wow our customers. What is surprising about the Seven is the large image it produces from such a sleek cabinet. At a whisker under three feet tall and a foot deep, the Seven is only 6 ½” wide. It is available in Black, Cherry or Rosenut. It’s very lean looking, but very full sounding.

The Seven starts life similarly to the Atom, a 5 ½” two way. Seven then adds two 5 ½” Mineral reinforced poly woofers to add significant muscle. We guaranty that when you stand back in our listening room, you’ll be amazed at the fullness the Seven can produce. At 94dB SPL, you can drive it with literally any receiver. I say that with a special eye on some of today’s sound receivers that are not as Herculean as their wattage ratings try to lead you to believe.

Of course you want a slamming sub in your home theater system. But if you have a room where the little lady wants things lean and clean, the Seven is the answer! You won’t miss a sub that much!

The Tangos Of Astor Piazzolla

Pianists Emanuel Ax (American) & Pablo Ziegler (Argentine) have combined to create “Los Tangueros.” This is a CD which has a distinct Argentine feel with four hands on two pianos. Ziegler plays the left, Ax the right. It’s a fine sounding DDD CD on Sony (SK 62728).

Composer Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) wrote these tangos as serious classical music, not traditional tangos to “dance to.” They were first written for piano and orchestra and later arranged for two pianos. This recording is the rare find for me- modern music that I like and recommend!
