Paradigm Special Edition Series- Brand New! Black Gloss or Rosenut

Paradigm has offered its Monitor Series of speakers forever. Featuring Atom/Mini/7/9 etc with matching subs and centers- it’s a very nice line for about $1k pr on down.

Paradigm has offered its Reference Series of speakers forever too. The Monitor Series features the S-10/20/60/100, matching centers & subs. The Ref Series features real wood cabinets and a more sophisticated driver technology that utilizes their S-PAL metal cone midrange driver.

The new SE Series is essentially a blend between the two. They’re going with a short line of models fill a distinct niche in our business.

The SE models feature real wood cabinets with Reference Series drivers. The cabinets are not quite as advanced as the Ref Series in that they are not rounded. Yet they are sturdy, heavy cabinets with a gorgeous finish. In using the Ref Series drive elements, they SOUND quite competitive with the Refs, for a good buck less.

Another decision Paradigm made with the SE Series- is to keep the cabinet sizes relatively small. You need enough cabinet to develop rich sound. But they understand that you don’t want the speakers to take over your room. Companies are always wrestling with the decision to make a lifestyle speaker that looks stylish, but doesn’t sound good, or make a real audio product, that looks clunky. The SE Series does a great job of serving both markets.

The SE-3 towers for example, are less than 3’ tall and present a very small footprint in your room. Yet the sound is quite full. The SE Center is only 17 ½” wide and fits many cabinets easily. The SE-1 surrounds are about the same size as the Atoms. The SE Sub is under a foot square. The SE Sub comes as a floor firing system. If it is going in a cabinet, you can remove the feet and orient them on another side- so it becomes a front firing sub through a grill on the cabinet.

Chopin Concerto – Emanuel Ax

I’m not a big fan of “original instrument” recordings. As a piano lover, the pianos of the classical and early romantic periods often sound more like harpsichords or banjos than the modern piano. I’ve found a great exception! (Sony SK 60771) Emanuel Ax has recorded Chopin’s concerto #1 and a couple of other Chopin works on an 1851 Erard piano. The sound is much more like our modern piano than traditional period instruments. Made near the time of Chopin’s death, we might conclude that Chopin himself played on a piano that sounds like this. The sound doesn’t “project” as big and sustained as today’s pianos. But it has a mellow flavor that Ax says, “naturally affects the choice of tempo and makes the improvisational quality of Chopin’s decorative top lines so much more evident. The variety of sound makes all balance problems between the hands disappear and gives the music a more incisive and exciting character.”
