Mahogany or Black Ash (11 1/8h, 6 1/8w, 9 1/2d)
I’ve been married to my wife a hundred years. She’s seen every odd contraption of box (& panel) come through our doors and just shakes her head. But not this time! Debbie dubbed the S-1 “Waaaaay cute!” S-1 gets the Wife Acceptance Factor award with five stars. That’s a pretty good start for selling your wife on a new pair of speakers!
But just getting new speakers… isn’t a big deal. The big deal is getting the open, airy sound of a True Ribbon design, in a gorgeous small cabinet at affordable money.
One of the most venerable names in the audio biz is Quad of England. Peter Walker started the biz in 1936 creating PA systems for vocalists to sing over bands/orchestras. After WWII he went into the home audio biz. His first speaker in 1951 was the Corner Ribbon. Peter was way ahead of his time!
The Corner Ribbon was a triangular cabinet to place in a corner of the room, with 12” cone woofer and a ribbon tweeter. The audio press was quite impressed with this cutting edge, blending of technology, cone bass-mid and ribbon tweeter. The ribbon tweeter attained clarity traditional tweeters still can’t match! Quad has continued to refine this technology as you might have guessed. Fast forward to today, and we have a line of Quad speakers using Kevlar bass-mid drivers and ribbon tweeters!
Unique compared to most affordable ribbon designs, Quad features a metalized diaphragm controlled by push/pull magnets. There are many so called ribbon tweeters on the market today that are pieces of this, glued to pieces of that, without equal magnetic control to push/pull the diaphragm. Quad insists on doing it the purist way for best performance.
Quad uses two different wood materials, along with internal bracing, in its speaker cabinets to control resonance. The result is a very inert cabinet without needed heavy MASS.
The real wood FINISH of the speaker line is exceptional. You can get the speakers in Sapele Mahogany or Black Ash. They’re both fine finishes, but the Mahogany is especially luscious, says me.
Quad Bass-Mid Drivers
Quad bass-mids are made of Kevlar so they’re very strong. You can get more impact out of these Quads than you would envision for the size of the enclosures or drive elements. S-1 features a 4” driver. Performance is downright jaw dropping for the size!
If you want a little more thunder, of course Quad has carrots to put in front of your nose. Read on at your own risk.
Quad crossovers are conspicuously expensive for the price points in which they are used. The result is that the drivers blend well, and the speakers sound a more immediate/transparent than your average bear.
