Nobody says more, in less time, than Chopin. Nobody understood the piano better. Nobody is a better architect of music for this magnificent instrument, which provides a full orchestra of colors.

Chopin has dozens of pieces that are short, yet they’re fully formed and mature. As I learned to play several of these through the tutelage of my eminently patient teacher, Marlene Cook, I have learned first hand how Chopin’s absolute genius differs from just being “good” or “pretty.”

Let’s start with his Preludes. He wrote 26. I’ll highlight the best according to me. I especially like Murray Perahia’s recordings.

#4 in E Minor 1:50: a haunting walk, complete with dynamics and beautifully patient finish

#9 in E Major 1:19: majestic, rich, lilting, resolved

#10 in C Sharp Major 0:26: that’s right, 26 seconds, speed, beauty & sonorous

#12 in G Sharp Minor 1:07: a raging, building avalanche with demur, complete finish

#15 in D Flat Major 5:04: says more than a long sonata by anyone else!

#20 in C Minor: the most gorgeous, sadly tinged chordal progression

Chopin’s Nocturne’s are similarly fabulous. My clear fave:

Op55 #1: 5:40: in five and half minutes, a symphony for piano!
