If you want true DEEP bass with HEFTY, life-like foundation in your music, please consider dual JL Audio powered subwoofers. Starting your speaker system with a double barrel of JLs is a perspicacious move!

First of all, they are not prohibitively expensive. A double barrel of D-110s runs $2200. You can buy wing (R&L) speakers of your choice to go with them. Since you were smart enough to buy D-110s, you don’t necessarily need ferocious wing speakers- unless you listen at frightful volume levels. Most of us would be pleased with wings that run a grand or a bit over. That’s only $3200 ALL IN.

Guess what kind of towers you’ll get for $3k ish? You’ll get generic, lightweight skinny towers with a couple of puny 5 or 6” “woofers.” Sorry amigo, they will not begin to compare with double barrel D-110s and great wings like- a set of Bryston Mini A’s. It ain’t even close!

Fact is, the market is flooded with positively generic gutless towers. The majority of them are made by companies we’ve never heard of at the other side of the world. These vendors will put whatever name you request on your speaker order.

Let’s say we want to start Milwaukee Speakers. We just call up vendor X, wire them some money, and cartons eventually show up at our door saying Milwaukee Speakers on them. Vendor X makes virtually the exact speakers (with a twist of lime) for a myriad of resellers. There are literally hundreds of speakers being marketed in all manner of blatherskite- that are basically the same thing, coming out of the same few houses! JL Audio couldn’t be more different.

JL Audio builds its products in Florida and makes a line of tuneful subs that serve music faithfully. They’re not just thunder boomers.

JL Audio is significantly better than your average bear because its hardware is better! JL subwoofer drivers are not bought out of a bin. They make them right here in the USA.

Double Subwoofers

The double barrel concept makes sense on many levels.

Two subwoofers give you musical balance that one cannot. One sub sounds directional if you have a keen ear. Further, beyond balance, the extra horse power of double subs is… double the impact and FUN! You get more uumph to the music at lower volumes too.

Having dedicated amplifiers, to prescribed subwoofer drivers, cabinets and crossovers, is the best way to deliver accurate bass.

Driving your wing speakers with their own amp is the best way to make them sound their best.

When you run your amp to the wings, and let the JL powered subs do the heavy lifting down low, you’ve improved your system’s sound in all regards. Even if you have decent towers, driving them full range with one amp presents a difficult challenge. You have to fight your way through a more complex crossover network. Your amp gets confused by dealing with the back EMF of the multitude of drivers and impedances it sees. When you go double barrel, you’re winning all the way.

The Goods

Take a look at these bad boys. One quick look, assessing JL vs the other guys, makes it abundantly clear that the mass makers don’t have a prayer of competing with JL’s muscle and control. And this is before we actually discuss musical timbre.

While JL subs are perfectly at home with theater usage, they stand above the empire of mediocrity because they’re musically adroit. JL’s are not “one note” mudders. They delineate bass textures articulately.

A good example would be, while listening to a jazz trio of piano/bass/drums, there’s a lot of content going on in the bass region that can smear. JL subs have the ability to reveal nuances that are obfuscated by the chunky monkeys on line or at big box.

JL delivers not only deeper and stronger bass, it allows you to discern the differences in musical character. For example, no two Steinway concert grands sound the same. Due to age, action, wear and tuning- they’re all different. It’s the same with drum kits and bass fiddles. If you want to appreciate the ability of great musicians to communicate their musical message and choices to us, I for one, would like to hear it down to the last drop! And that’s what JL is unlocking for us two channel hounds.

When you actually HEAR a system with double barrel JL subs in the flesh, you’ll know why
we’re passionate about this topic. Audio Emporium does indeed, have several double barrel combinations on display for your inspection. I’ll warn you now, you’ll be shocked at how good and DIFFERENT these double barrels are compared to all the similarly price competitors.

When you visit to hear JL double barrels, you’re in for a treat. You’re going to hear weight in a drum kit, for example, that’s realistic. When you hear this, you’ll realize the other guys are offering tinker toys.
